Six 15 ml bottles built around the Indian household tradition: tulsi and turmeric from Ayurveda, vetiver and cedarwood for grounding, eucalyptus and peppermint for the change of season. Steam-distilled from Indian-grown material, undiluted, supplied as six separate bottles. This is the set to buy if you want the traditional oils rather than the fashionable ones.

What’s in this set

Vetiver (Khus) Vetiveria zizanioides Steam distilled Roots 15 ml

Six oils, two traditions

  • Himalayan Cedarwood (Cedrus deodara) — Warm, dry and woody. The traditional partner to rosemary in scalp oils, and a grounding base note that stops a floral blend smelling thin.
  • Peppermint (Mentha piperita) — Cooling, bright and unmistakable. Traditionally used in steam and, heavily diluted, in temple and neck massage oils.
  • Holy Basil (Tulsi) (Ocimum sanctum) — Tulsi — the plant in the courtyard of countless Indian homes, distilled. Green, peppery and clove-like, traditionally associated with everyday wellbeing.
  • Turmeric (Curcuma longa) — Warm, earthy and rooted in Ayurveda — the distilled oil of the root, not the kitchen powder. Used aromatically and in well-diluted skin oils. It can stain, so dilute and patch test.
  • Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) — The steam-bowl classic. A familiar, clearing aroma that Indian households have leaned on through every change of season.
  • Vetiver (Khus) (Vetiveria zizanioides) — Khus. Smoky, cooling and deeply grounding — the scent of summer khus screens, and a base note that anchors any blend it joins.

How to use

Seasonal steam. 1–2 drops of eucalyptus, or one each of eucalyptus and peppermint, in a bowl of hot — not boiling — water. Eyes closed, towel over the head, a few minutes at a time.

Evening diffuser. 3 drops vetiver with 2 drops cedarwood makes the deep, settled blend people use at the end of the day.

Massage blend. Turmeric and holy basil at 1–2% in sesame or coconut oil, the way abhyanga oils have traditionally been scented.

Frequently asked questions

Why turmeric oil rather than turmeric powder?

They are different products entirely. This is the steam-distilled volatile oil of the root — aromatic and oil-soluble, with none of the curcumin the powder is known for.

Is turmeric essential oil the same as turmeric powder?

No. This is the steam-distilled volatile oil of the root — aromatic, oil-soluble and highly concentrated. It contains none of the curcumin that gives the powder its colour and its dietary reputation.

What is tulsi oil traditionally used for?

Holy basil has been part of Indian household tradition for centuries, burned, brewed and grown at the doorstep for everyday wellbeing. The distilled oil is used aromatically and, well diluted, in massage blends.

Can I take these internally?

No. Essential oils are not to be swallowed, added to food, or taken in water.

Will turmeric oil stain my skin?

It can mark skin and fabric at higher concentrations. Keep it at 1% or below in a carrier oil and patch test first.

How do I use them together?

2–3 drops of each in a diffuser, or diluted to 1–2% in a carrier oil for massage.
