What each one is for

  • Frankincense (Boswellia serrata) — Resinous, dry and quietly luxurious. Traditionally used in facial oils for mature skin, and burned for centuries in meditation and prayer.
  • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) — The all-rounder of any collection. Soft, floral and familiar — traditionally used to wind down in the evening, and the one oil most people reach for first in a diffuser.
  • Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) — Sharp, green and unmistakably medicinal. The classic choice for blemish-prone skin and for freshening laundry, floors and bins — always diluted.
  • Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) — A heady, sweet tropical floral. Traditionally used in hair and skin oils across South and South-East Asia, and as a relaxing evening aroma. A little goes a long way.
  • Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) — Deep, earthy and unmistakable. Doubles as a natural fixative — a drop makes the rest of a blend last noticeably longer on skin or in a room.
  • Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) — Rosy and green at once. Traditionally used in facial oils for combination skin, and the affordable way to bring a rose-like note into a blend.

How to use

Facial oil. 1 drop total per 5 ml of jojoba or grapeseed — a 1% dilution. Frankincense with a single drop of geranium is the classic starting blend.

Blemish-prone areas. Tea tree at 1–2% in aloe gel or a light carrier, applied to the area rather than the whole face.

Body and bath. 2–3% in a carrier oil after a shower, or 4–5 drops stirred into a tablespoon of milk or salts before adding to the bath — never straight into the water.

Dilution guide

Use Dilution Drops per 10 ml carrier oil
Face, sensitive skin, children over 6 1% 2 drops
Body, daily massage 2% 4 drops
Targeted use on a small area 3% 6 drops
Diffuser (100–300 ml tank) 5–8 drops in water

Safety & storage

  • Never apply undiluted essential oil to skin. Dilute in a carrier oil first.
  • Patch test on the inner forearm and wait 24 hours before wider use.
  • Not to be taken internally. Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets. Consult a doctor if pregnant, nursing or under medical care.
  • Store upright in the closed amber bottle, away from sunlight and heat. Flammable — keep away from open flame.

Frequently asked questions

Which of the six should I start with?

Lavender and tea tree. They are the most forgiving, the most documented, and between them they cover most of what people want from a first skin set.

Can I apply these directly to my face?

No. Dilute to 1% for facial use — about 1 drop per 5 ml of carrier oil or unscented moisturiser. Undiluted essential oil on facial skin is the most common mistake beginners make.

How do I patch test?

Put a diluted drop on the inside of your forearm, leave it 24 hours, and check for redness or itching before using it on your face.

Will this clear my acne?

We do not make treatment claims. Tea tree and similar oils have a long traditional use in routines for blemish-prone skin, but persistent or cystic acne needs a dermatologist, not an essential oil.

Can I use these on sensitive skin?

Start at 0.5–1% dilution and patch test. Skip citrus oils before sun exposure — cold-pressed citrus is photosensitising.

Can I mix them into my existing serum or moisturiser?

Yes, and it is the simplest way to start. Add 1–2 drops to a palmful of unscented moisturiser rather than to the whole jar, so you can adjust.
