Two bottles, 30 ml each, from opposite ends of the shelf: vetiver, distilled from roots and about as deep and smoky as an oil gets, and tea tree, sharp and green and the one most people already recognise. Both steam-distilled and undiluted, in separate bottles.

What’s in this set

Oil Botanical name Extraction Plant part Origin Size
Vetiver Vetiveria zizanioides Steam distilled Roots India 30 ml
Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia Steam distilled Leaves India 30 ml

Roots and leaves

  • Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) — Deep, smoky and unmistakably of the earth, because it is distilled from the roots rather than the leaves or flowers — the only root oil in our range. Traditionally used in grounding evening blends, and a natural fixative: a drop makes the rest of a blend last noticeably longer.
  • Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) — Sharp, green and unmistakably medicinal. The classic choice for blemish-prone skin and for freshening laundry, floors and bins — always diluted.

How to use

Blemish-prone areas. Tea tree at 1–2% — 1 to 2 drops per 10 ml of aloe gel or a light carrier oil — dabbed on the area rather than over the whole face. Never neat on skin.

Grounding evening diffuser. 3 drops vetiver to 1 drop tea tree. Vetiver is heavy, so keep it the smaller half of any blend you want to stay light.

Body massage oil. 2 drops vetiver per 10 ml of jojoba or almond oil — a 1% dilution — worked into shoulders at the end of the day.

Around the house. 10–15 drops of tea tree in a 500 ml water-and-vinegar spray for floors, bins and laundry rinses.

Dilution guide

Use Dilution Drops per 10 ml carrier oil

Targeted use on a small area 3% 6 drops
Diffuser (100–300 ml tank) 5–8 drops in water

Safety & storage

  • Never apply undiluted essential oil to skin. Dilute in a carrier oil first.
  • Patch test on the inner forearm and wait 24 hours before wider use.
  • Not to be taken internally. Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets. Consult a doctor if pregnant, nursing or under medical care.
  • Store upright in the closed amber bottle, away from sunlight and heat. Flammable — keep away from open flame.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put tea tree straight on a spot?

No, and please do not. Neat tea tree on facial skin is the most common cause of irritation people report with this oil. 1–2% in aloe gel — 1 to 2 drops per 10 ml — gets you there without the sting.

Will this clear up blemish-prone skin?

We make no treatment claims of any kind. Tea tree has a long traditional place in routines for blemish-prone skin, but anything persistent is a question for a dermatologist, not an essential oil.

Why does vetiver smell like soil?

Because it comes from underground — vetiver is distilled from the washed roots of the grass, not from leaves or flowers. That is where the smoky character comes from, and why one drop carries so far.

Can I apply these directly to my face?

No. Dilute to 1% for facial use — about 1 drop per 5 ml of carrier oil or unscented moisturiser. Undiluted essential oil on facial skin is the most common mistake beginners make.

How do I patch test?

Put a diluted drop on the inside of your forearm, leave it 24 hours, and check for redness or itching before using it on your face.

Can I mix them into my existing serum or moisturiser?

Yes, and it is the simplest way to start. Add 1–2 drops to a palmful of unscented moisturiser rather than to the whole jar, so you can adjust.
